How to Repair a Bifold Door Top Pivot

The top pivot of a bifold closet door can be loosened and scrape the floor. You can correct this by loosening the set screw on the top bracket a bit.

The top pivot pin is a screw made of metal that is inserted into a cap made of plastic that has a rounded end and remains in the track above the front door. You'll need a screwdriver, and possibly pliers.

Take the Bottom Pin off

Bifold doors are ideal to save space in a closet, but they can start to sag or scrape against the floor, or even pop out of their brackets. It is possible to fix the problem with some basic adjustments.

The most common problem is loose bottom pins or bracket. You can correct this by pressing the spring-loaded wheel at the top of the door and then swivelling the door in a position to align it with the bottom track. If this is the case, place it on a set of saw horses to make it easier to handle.

Take off the Top Pin

Bifold doors are great for reducing space, but they can be frustrating when they start to sag and scrape against the floor or jump off the track. A few simple adjustments can often get them back on track.

If the doors slide in a different way then loosen the screw at the top bracket pivot point and move it slightly. Close the door and check whether it is in alignment with the frame. If it does, tighten the screw.

Another common issue with internal bifold doors is that the bottoms of the door scrape against the carpet. If this is the case you can raise the bottom of the doors using the bottom pin adjustement. But if the door is too high, you'll have to remove the doors and cut them down with the help of a saw.

Over time over time, the wood around the pivot and anchor pins can break. If this happens, you can use epoxy to repair the damage and stop it from getting worse. Apply a small amount to the crack, and let it dry before using the door.
